Your Old Droog- “Space Bar” (Album Review)

Welcome to Space Bar, an album that may not be as conceptually cohesive or as topically challenging as Your Old Droog’s last album Time, but one that shows the Dump Gawd members twisted demeanor in an entirely new and refreshing light. Creating a mystical bar of some sort through his raw and unfiltered thoughts, Droog sets up an odd feeling of intimacy but not in the way where you would expect him to pour his feelings out, but instead in an outlet for him to lash out his most sick and unfiltered thoughts. For the project’s entire 32 minutes, this principle remains true, and with comically sickening punchlines and memorable hooks, Old Droog puts fun before all else. Whether he’s reciting tales of his childhood or flaunting his own success, Droog’s brutally honest narrations of his thoughts are so entertaining to listen to. No matter the severity or the depth he goes into through his various tales, the Dump Gawd member excels at keeping the project light-hearted and charismatic with his witty style of rhyming and cocky delivery. Additionally helping keep the concept as well put together as it is, the records score perfectly accompanies Droog’s narration through its futuristic feel, which is conveyed through its overall faintness and electronic coating. All in all, while he may not be using his skills to accomplish the most meaningful of goals, Space Bar is a perfect testament that there is nothing wrong with just having fun in music, no matter how talented one may be.
