Backxwash- “I Lie Here Buried With Rings and My Dresses” (Album Review)

Sounding like something made from the depths of Hell, Backxwash’s 2021 release I Lie Here Buried With My Rings and My Dresses may be the most horrifying listening experience in hip hop’s entire history. Through long-life resentment and traumatic experiences, the 30-year-old puts all of her rage into 33 minutes that go by in a single spine-tingling blur. Using her deranged vocals, which can shake any listener’s soul due to the pure delivery of her rage, the performance from Backxwash may be disturbing but in the very best way possible. While her songwriting and lyrical ability get muddied up in the midst of chaos, this is for a good reason as the album’s industrial score takes a minimal approach in comparison to other experimental acts but ultimately uses this as a strength. With haunting vocal samples, atmospheric electric coating, and warping synths, these odd musical infusions create a well-fitted texture for Backxwash to deliver her one-of-a-kind experience over. Even in today’s versatile playing pool that hip hop has turned into, I Lie Here Buried With My Rings and My Dresses sticks out like a sore thumb that the entire world should hear.
