EARTHGANG’s fourth studio album, GHETTO GODS, offers everything we could have wanted from the Atlanta duo. Both Johnny Venus and Doctur Dot put on a stellar performance, embodying all aspects of their dynamic skillset from both a stylistic and topical standpoint. From the grooviness of Venus to the smoothness of Dot, the pair understands each other so well, which is reflected in the project from start to finish. They create a wide array of sonic environments, ranging from the in-your-face self-titled track to the intoxicating “LIE TO ME.” No matter what style the group is playing with, Dot and Venus bring so much energy and passion to all of the project’s 13 core tracks. While this fire sometimes lacks the proper care, especially when the group tries to expand their topical range or utilize more diverse vocal pockets, most of the records 53 minute running time warrants its length. Adding to the tandem that is Doctur Dot and Jonny Venus, the features on this album further build on the fantastic collaborative atmosphere. Future, J. Cole, JID, CeeLo Green, and others contribute with performances that enhance the listening experience. Looking at all EARTHGANG was able to incorporate into this record, this record is certainly a fine addition to their catalog and one of their most well-rounded to date.
